The new Intel Consumers Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processors promise to improve the performance of energy efficiency that Intel Atom netbook in many, but at a lower price than the more conventional use Intel Centrino chip.

Consequently, a new wave of affordable “thin and light” notebook CULV are expected in the coming months, although the first one we reviewed, the Asus UX30 was a little too much to qualify.

At 600 pounds, Advent Altro seems like a better candidate and has an area similar to the Asus UX30 elegant. The silver plastic case is not quite the same prestige, however, and its adjustment profile is defeated by two large air intakes on each side. However, lack of ventilation at the bottom, at least, means that Altro can be safely used on your lap.

However, Altro is still only 21mm thick and has a removable battery. Perhaps just as well since it was found that the battery life to use the light was only three hours and two minutes.

A large keypad and 13.3IN bright screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 compared to the two main complaints has stabilized in most netbooks, and make Altro much more comfortable to wear for long periods. The glossy finish on the trackpad does not bother us, however, because it is too sticky to slide a finger gently.

Advent supplies from a port replicator that allows small Altro to sit in the middle of a set-up office, supplementing HDMI and USB integrated with Ethernet, VGA and a pair of USB ports, but it raises a little concern. The plugs on the port replicator as well as food and, while giving a pass because, although harbor, it takes the form of a large owner of several pins instead of mounting the cutting edge usually circular. It seems solid enough, but it will be harder for a replacement power supply, especially in a pinch.

The low voltage Intel Celeron M 723 in Advent Altro is not as capable as equally frugal CULV Core 2 Duo chip in the Asus UX30. In fact, it’s just faster than the Intel Atom, and since it is a single-chip heart, which offers no advantage when running multiple applications. It has the same problems as the atom when it comes to video playback in full screen, but this is no consolation.

Given its performance and specifications, the advent Altro is a big step up from the Eee PC 1101HA, however, costs more. It was only a fraction of the battery life of Eee PC, an ultraportable that does not last long outside the network is really not much at all.

Ricoh is a camera manufacturer that tends to swim against the current, not only in terms of product range but also in the way the schedules of their product announcements. While all the major announced their new toys just before or at the PMA in Las Vegas, Ricoh has decided to wait a few more weeks and let the world know about the new addition to its line of compact cameras in one Conversely, press.

The R8 is an update to the R7, launched a mere six months ago. The new model is just a small update. The main changes are the new, slightly Boxie design, the inevitable increase in megapixels (from eight to ten) and a larger 2.7 “screen has an impressive resolution of 460,000 pixels. 28-200mm equiv. And Zoom 3rd Generation Engine soft image taken from above.

    *  10.0 million effective pixels
* 7.1x (28-200mm equiv.) zoom, step zoom selectable (28, 35, 50, 85, 105, 135, 200mm)
* ISO 1600
* Optical Image Stabilization (sensor shift)
* Smooth Imaging Engine III
* Face Detection
* 2.7″ LCD screen (460,000 pixels)
* Levels and white balance adjustment in review mode
* 1cm macro mode
* AF/AE target shift

In addition, the R8 comes with a number of interesting features that are rarely seen on the major camera manufacturers. The list includes a mobile feature AF / AE target area, the image option 1:1 ratio and the levels and white balance adjustment mode in question, among others.

In the market for the Ricoh R8 will be created against rivals such as Panasonic’s TZ series or Canon SX100 IS. We have one of the first specimens in the R8’s launch day, and put through the test which is the testing process. See how it went through the abuse and how it forms against the competition on the following pages. For further information regarding this camera, you could go HERE.

Acer will release new laptop that call Acer’s new Gemstone ‘Blue’. The original Gemstone won numerous awards for its feature-packed design and affordable price. It won no awards for its looks, though, which were some of the ugliest we’ve seen on a laptop.

The headline features on the new Gemstone Blue, officially known as the Aspire 8920G, is its 18.4in display (its cheaper sister model, the Aspire 6920G, has a 16in display) with a 16:9, rather than 16:10, aspect ratio. The resolution is ‘full HD’ (1,920×1,080 rather than 1,920×1,200 on 16:10 laptops), which makes it more suitable for films or viewing two documents side by side.

Acer claims that not only are its screens bigger but also brighter, and the 18.4 inches version is supposed to display 90 per cent of NTSC colour gamut, which means it should be able to show clearer and more accurate colours than other notebooks.

According to Acer, the 18.4in screen is rated at 300cd/m2, but our Spyder3Elite calibrator measured just 154.3cd/m2, which is still an excellent result for a laptop screen. We also calculated that the screen was capable of 93.1 per cent of NTSC gamut, better than Acer’s claims and an outstanding result.

The chassis is a completely new design, with a sturdy dark blue LCD backing, black underside and a textured silver wristrest. Touch-sensitive media controls that light up are to the left of the keyboard and are the most striking inclusion. The keyboard is glossy black and can be a slippery affair when typing on it. One big flaw with its design, which is also present on a handful of other notebooks, is that your thumb consistently hits the chassis curb when you use the spacebar.

Other features include a dual-speed Blu-ray reader, which will also write to DVDs at eight-speed, and six speakers – five tweeters and a subwoofer for surround sound – which are Dolby Home Theatre certified. They sounded a little flat compared with those on Toshiba’s P200 and X200 notebooks, confirming our experience that a Dolby-optimised driver (and Dolby sticker) doesn’t necessarily ensure top sound quality from built-in speakers.

Inside there’s a Penryn-based Core 2 Duo T9300 running at 2.5GHz with 6MB of L2 cache – one of Intel’s fastest mobile dual-cores – two 667MHz Dimms providing 4GB of Ram and two 320GB hard drives.

The 8920G is the first we’ve seen with Nvidia’s Geforce 9650M GS mobile graphics card, the midrange for its new 9000-series. It has 32 stream processors and 512MB of GDDR3 memory, which is enough to cope with games a couple of years old, reflected by a respectable 3Dmark06 score of 5,859. However, our World in Conflict test could only muster 13fps on high settings at its native resolution, so new DirectX 10 games will need you to turn the resolution down.

The 8920G’s 4,800mAh battery limped to one hour, 46 minutes in our DVD playback test. When we enabled hardware MPEG acceleration on the graphics card, which improves playback quality, the battery life dropped to one hour, 22 minutes.

This result, combined with its 4.7kg weight, means the 8920G is truly a desktop replacement. It runs quietly, is great for Blu-ray playback and looks good compared with older Gemstone notebooks. Vista Ultimate completes a good-value package, but the high keyboard curb and average speakers pull it back from a perfect score.

Digital camera reviews are abundant not just online but also in the newspapers, magazines and even TV shows. We often wonder why most digital camera reviews always praise all the digital camera out in the market, that’s why we end up getting confused on which product to buy or get our loved ones.

Here’s one thing you should never trust regarding digital camera reviews – never trust press releases or reviews that are directly from the manufacturer or advertising office that is directly connected with producer of the digital camera. Why?! Well because these digital camera reviews are never too truthful, or they just give out the good points about their products. I mean, what would you expect, supposing you own your own line of digital cameras and to boost your sales, you release digital camera reviews about your products. Of course you wouldn’t point out the bad things or the glitches of your product in your digital camera reviews, because that way you will never be able to shoot up your sales. Press releases or digital camera reviews from manufacturer are always half-truths. Haven’t you had any experience with that?! I mean, that just doesn’t go for digital camera, remember that brush-blower thing that you bought over the internet that says it would work tremendously for your hair, but ended not working for your hair after all. Press releases are press releases, meaning that they are aimed to get people to buy the product or to give the product a better name.

On more thing that you can never fully trust are home shopping networks and advertisements. As much as press releases, they pretty much pose the same claims about their products. But hey, don’t trust me, you can always get them and return them after proving to yourself that it doesn’t work. Never mind the time and effort that you’ve wasted, you chose to listen to a half-truth digital camera review, that’s what you get for that.

The best digital camera reviews available are those found in specialty magazines (computer based and technical magazines), special websites catering to techie stuff and unofficial digital camera reviews. Why?! Well because! Because these digital camera reviews are always truthful. These reviewers and critics are never afraid to list down the good as much as the bad points of digital cameras. These digital camera reviews usually points out the difference between the products that a certain manufacturer has released and how it is worse or better than the previous one. These reviewers and critics are also knowledgeable in their craft, so its say to safe to say that they know what they are talking about when it comes to digital camera reviews. One more thing, most of the time, these digital camera reviews are actual first hand experience with the product itself and not just some advertising agent asked to come up with flowery words to capture you and your wallet.

Another best source for a digital camera review is one that you can write yourself. And how can you do that?! Of course, you first need to buy your own digital camera, try it out and compare everything that you do with it to the things that it claims to be. (be careful to read the specs, options and features that you need to try out, be on the lookout for words such as weatherproof, meaning that they are splash resistant as to waterproof that are water resistant. You don’t want to get your newly bought weatherproof camera wet, just to prove to yourself that the things they claim are not true). After doing so, then you can write your own digital camera review or reviews, depending on how many things you’ve learned from your digital camera. Be sure to indicate that your review is an on-hand experience with the product and not just some wild guess.

The most honest digital camera reviews are the best reviews you can look for and trust. Anyway, you can always call customer center or return your digital camera if they don’t live up to their claims.
